The Tereheamanu community of municipalities brings together on the island of Tahiti a total of 13 small associated municipalities grouped within the 5 large rural and peri-urban municipalities that are Papara, Teva I Uta, Taiarapu-West, Taiarapu-East and Hitia’a O Te Ra. Having by decree the power to intervene in the field of environmental protection and enhancement, in the context of a territory in full development at multiple scales (economic, demographic, energy, societal), this community has undertaken rural developments that it wishes to be resilient and eco-responsible.
In this context, it was decided to monitor the water quality of the 17 rivers in the territory over three consecutive years (2023, 2024 and 2025). In the long term, the objective is to move towards excellent bathing water quality for all the municipalities concerned through various environmental management means. The sampling sites include 18 water and sediment sampling points located at the mouths of the watercourses selected in advance by the elected representatives of the respective municipalities. The analyses concerned are as follows: bacteriology (content of Escherichia coli and faecal enterococci), pesticide concentrations, particle size. The physico-chemical characterization of watercourses is also established using probes (pH, temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen), monitoring of annual bed dimensions (width and depth) as well as current velocity.
